Are You Ready? Message from Miami-Dade County About the 2023 Hurricane Season.

Hurricane season has gotten more unusual and less predictable over the last few years. In 2020, there were 30 named storms, including 13 hurricanes, six of which were Category 3 or higher. It was the most active Atlantic hurricane season in recorded history. In 2021, Tropical Storm Ana formed on May 22, a week before the start of hurricane season. It was also the third time that the entire 21-name list of storm names designated by the National Hurricane Center was used up. Last year, there were no named storms at all in the Atlantic Ocean from July 3 to the end of August, which hasn't happened since 1941. However, things picked up considerably after that, and when Hurricane Nicole made landfall on the east coast of central Florida on Nov. 10, it became the first November hurricane to make landfall in Florida in almost 40 years.

As we approach the beginning of another unpredictable hurricane season, it's important that we take necessary steps to protect ourselves, our families and our homes. Be prepared before, during and after a storm with the help of Miami-Dade County's 2023 Hurricane Guide, sponsored by Dade County Federal Credit Union. You'll find storm preparation tips, including a checklist of items to keep in your disaster kit, and information on how to stay safe and avoid hazards during and after a storm. Visit miamidade.gov/hurricane to learn how to sign up for alerts, find your storm surge planning zone, download the Ready MDC mobile app and access other County resources.

Please take some time to prepare now for hurricane season. Don't wait until the last minute, as supplies may be limited or unavailable. Consider investing in storm shutters or impact-resistant windows to protect your home and valuables. A personal loan from Dade County Federal Credit Union can get you the funds you need to help secure your home and keep your family safe.
